In the same way that God cares for the family by providing leaders (parents) who care for it, one of the ways that God cares for His people, the Church, is by raising up servant-leaders for the local church to care for its spiritual and material well-being.
Elders are the leaders who are called to oversee the spiritual well being of the church. In the Scripture, we see that a church is led by a plurality of leaders called elders (of which the pastor is one), and that those leaders are to be elected to care for a local congregation by the members of that local congregation.
The Deacon is an office of “sympathy and service” (PCA Book of Church Order 9-1, and assist the elders in their care of the congregation by giving particular leadership to the material needs and ministries of the church (see Acts 6:1-7).
Ultimately, both elders and deacons are qualified by their life and character, and have demonstrated the abilities necessary to their calling (see 1 Tim. 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-16). Such a life is the by-product of God’s work in them, and as such, they are described as gifts that God bestows on the church to equip all his people, “saints”, for the work of ministry (see Eph. 4:11-12).
