The Suffering Church

February 5, 2012 Speaker: Walter Wood, Jr. Series: Revelation: More Than Conquerors

Topic: Sermons Scripture: Revelation 2:8–2:11

As we look at the letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation 2-3, we see that each church is either characterized by or is exhorted to emulate a particular biblical trait.  In the first letter to the church at Ephesus, they were exhorted to recapture their love for Christ and one another.  This week we look at the church of Smyrna, what is modern day Izmir, Turkey, a city of about 4 million on the Turkish west coast.  They were characterized by suffering.  They were under persecution and were suffering for their faith, something all churches in all generations experience to a greater or lesser extent.  Jesus encourages them and exhorts them to remain fiathful in their suffering.
